History of TV Thrillers

 History of TV Thriller

1950s-60s

These early days of tv thrillers were heavily influenced by radio shows and film noir. These consisted of very stereotypical detective and antagonist style story lines from big names like Alfred `Hitchcock.

1970s-80s

Now the detective crime narrative really hit off with elements of suspense and drama. A new era of psychological drama began as well as we see recognisable names like columbo and Miami vice which mixed action with crime thriller.

1990s

This decade we see the rise of long form tv drama which allows space for more complex and in depth story lines with plot twists and longer narratives. The x-files is a very popular show to this day as we see a blend of horror, sic-fi and conspiracy narrative.

2000s

The 90s paved the way in television for more complex narratives however now in the 2000s with advancing technology the boundaries were pushed with darker more sophisticated thrillers like Dexter. Dexter showed a new side to thrillers with this darker story line where the protagonist was infact the serial killer

2010s

Now streaming services allowed for much longer and binge worthy series with the ability to watch when your-lease rather than scheduling your watch time. The budget and quality is higher than ever with streaming services like Netflix start producing rather than just streaming. One of biggest thrillers of the 10s would have to be breaking bad where again moral boundaries are blurred as we follow the killer drug lord walter white.

Present day

Expectedly,

with the rise of technology technological thrillers and sci-fi is more popular than ever. We see events that are more real than ever occurring which is interesting to see the possible look of the future. Again psychological thrillers are very big but also mixed with true crime as we see shows like Dahmer and black bird
